Ok Charlie and myself were talking, and this seemed like a good idea he had. So I am presenting it to everyone. I know last year I tried to change the process, but it really was't possible without losing a year of drafting...this new process allows us to change without losing a year of a draft.
Instead of drafting prospects from teams, we would draft individual prospects that HAVE NOT been called up. The draft would be around 6-8 rounds long(dont compare this to the football draft, it will go A LOT quicker we have a lot better/more active owners here). At worst it would take a week.
If a player is drafted and they are called up, we sign them the same as we did in the past. If a player is drafted and they ARE NOT called up they go back into the pool. If a player IS CALLED UP and was not drafted they go into free agency.
The purpose of this is to allow teams to try to draft to fill their needs. It allows them to look to the future. If they know their 3B is a FA in 2 years, they can draft a young guy to eventually step in. Cleveland had the first pick and got the best player in Felix Hernandez, but they got little else beyond that. WIth this system they could have taken King Felix first, and maybe got say Jeremy Hermidia in round 2. They would be IN A LOT better situation with something like that, as opposed to just getting Felix. Or if a team NEEDS a 3B badly because their 3B is 38. They could have taken a chance on Ian Stewart in the first round. Then as a safety net take Edwin Encarnacion in round 4. I just think it REALLY allows teams to address individual needs WAY better.
Finally the other option that SOMEWHAT goes with this. We could potentially EXPAND our rosters. We could have a 40 man(we have to designate in advance). Then have an additional 5 or so that can be placed on the non active roster. That way if you get a guy that was called up in late september that only got 10 at bats and went hitless, you could still wait on him by placing him on the non active roster. I mean if we all got all 10 prospects we would definately have roster issues, so this would help.
Feedback is appreciated. I see little downfall here. Sure some guys may not study prospects as much as they need to, but this will encourage them to get out there and do it. There are TONS of free resources where you can follow guys. I don't pay ANYTHING to any site and I feel I have a good grasp on prospects. I spend 30 minutes a week TOPS keeping up.
Edited to change the length to 6-8 rounds as 10 is entirely too long upon further thoughts. Remember we wont GET 6-8 people most likely. Maybe 2/3 total at best...
